Dong Nai: A fishing cat handed over by a local resident

On March 26, a 3kg fishing cat (Prionailurus viverrinus) was transferred to Cat Tien NP by Dong Nai FPD. Two local residents called the ENV Hotline to inform them they had bought the wild animal when they saw it for sale at the market and they wanted to hand it over to local authorities. ENV immediately contacted and transferred the information to Dong Nai FPD for dealing with the case.

ENV’s Wildlife Crime officer praised the resident for their action in rescuing the wild animal and also explained that the action unfortunately did not help stop wildlife crime, and might even stimulate wildlife trade activity. This action at first appears to be a simple rescue, but could in fact put other animals at risk.

In such cases, ENV encourages people to persuade traders to voluntarily transfer animals to a sanctuary, or to inform authorities about a crime instead of purchasing wild animals.
