VietNamNet Bridge – Over 230,000cu.m of untreated wastewater flowed into the Thi Tinh River in Ben Cat district, the southern province of Binh Duong on July 25 after the wastewater reservoir of a foreign-invested food processing company broke.

After the incident, the dry reservoir gets dry to the bottom.

It was reported that a 30m dike section of a reservoir containing wastewater of the San Miguel Pure Foods Vietnam company located in Lai Hung commune suddenly broke on July 25.

Over 230,000sq.m of untreated wastewater from this 7.7ha reservoir swept through the gardens of surrounding houses into Ben Van stream, the upper Thi Tinh River and then the Saigon River.

The Thi Tinh River’s water reportedly turned black, killing a lot of fish. The local authorities are investigating the incident and have sent some water samples to laboratories for testing.

The local government has not calculated the level of pollution and losses to the environment and local people caused by this incident yet.

San Miguel Pure Foods Vietnam is on Binh Duong’s current black list for environment polluters. It was also in the top 25 polluters in HCM City in 2008. Concerned agencies were to check on the company’s status regarding the black list in August.
