Ho Chi Minh: Thousands of rare wild animals confiscated
On November 27th, 2008 Ho Chi Minh’s Environmental Police confiscated nearly 10,000 wild animals  including 435 Long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis), 150 Elongated tortoises (Indotestudo elongata), 489 Yellow-headed temple turtles (Hieremys annandalii), 517 Giant Asian pond turtles (Heosemys grandis), 478 Asian leaf turtles (Cyclemys tcheponensis), 468 Malayan snail-eating turtles (Malayemys subtrijuga), 469 Black marsh turtles (Siebenrockiella crassicollis), 290 Monitor lizards (Varanus sp.), 160 spot-billed ducks (Anas poecilorhyncha), and 400 King cobras (Ophiophagus hannah) from a  resident’s house.The wildlife’s owner had received permits to keep and trade a significant number of rare wildlife but had been using these permits for many other species.

Quang Binh:  Man caught illegally transporting two tons of snakes
On December 2nd, 2008 Quang Binh Police caught a man illegally transporting two tons of snakes. The incident is being investigated.

Soc Trang: Twenty-one kilograms of snakes released

Twenty-one kilograms of a variety of species of snakes were confiscated by the Provincial Forest Protection Department and released to the forest.

Bac Ninh: Illegal transportation of 3,000kg of industrial waste uncovered
On November 26th, 2008 the Provincial Environmental Police caught a man transporting 3,000kg of industrial waste. The evidence was confiscated for further investigation.

Binh Thuan: Company fined 90.8 million VND for illegally dumping waste water
The Binh Thuan People’s Committee has decided to fine Hai Nam Joint-Stock Company 90.8 million VND for dumping substandard waste water.

Dac Nong: Commune Chairman directed loggers to attack rangers
Over the last few days in an area managed by the Quang Tin Forestry Company in Tuy Duc district, there have been a series of cases of illegal deforestation and attacks on rangers. Of serious concern is the fact that Chairman of the Commune’s People’s Committee and his son had directed the loggers to attack rangers.

Training program helps FPD and Environmental police with investigate illegal bear trade
Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV), this week (2-5 December), conducted a bear trade investigation training program for six representatives from Provincial Forest Protection Departments and Environmental Police Bureaus from across Vietnam.  The four-day training course, held in Ha Noi, taught the trainees about intelligence gathering, action plans and other skills necessary to help them investigate the illegal trade of bears in Vietnam.
The training program was held with the support of the World Society for the Protection of Animals (WSPA).
