Ha Noi: Fifteen tons of illegally transported toxic waste uncovered
On October 14th, 2008 the Ha Noi Environment Police caught a man illegally transporting 15 tons of used lead batteries.

Thanh Hoa: Subjects fined 300 million VND for illegally transporting wildlife
Three people have been fined approximately 300 million VND for illegally transporting wildlife including parrots (unidentified species), Hillmynas (Gracula religiosa), Masked palm civet (Paguma larvata) and Brush-tailed porcupine (Atherurus macrourus).

Quang Tri: Coffee companies’ production suspended for illegally dumping waste
The Quang Tri People’s Committee has decided to order four coffee production companies’ to suspend operations for discharging untreated waste water into a stream.

More cases discovered of companies illegally dumping untreated waste water
On October 11th, 2008 Ho Chi Minh City’s Environment Police caught Hao Duong joint-stock tanning company pumping its untreated waste water into the nearby Dong Dien River. In another case uncovered in Phu Tho province a Viet Tri joint venture paper production company was found to have been dumping waste water directly into the Red River for 47 years.

Quang Ninh: Piles of waste found buried in hospital
Hundreds of tons of medical waste were recently found buried in the grounds of Yen Hung Hospital. However, the hospital’s director has denied that the hospital had any responsibility for this waste.

Cat Tien National Park: Bear sanctuary commences operations
On October 12th, 2008 a Bear Sanctuary, consisting of a one hectare area in Cat Tien National Park commenced operations. There are now a total of 16 bears living there including mostly Asian black bears.

Ha Giang: Tonkin snub-nosed langur community discovered
Scientists from Fauna and Flora International (FFI) have discovered a Tonkin snub-nosed langur community in a forest in Tung Vai commune in Quan Ba district. This is the second langur community discovered in Ha Giang since 2002.

IUCN Red List reveals world’s mammals in crisis
The 2008 IUCN Red List of threatened species, launched on October 6th at the IUCN World Conservation Congress, provides the most comprehensive assessment of the world’s mammals and indicates a serious extinction crisis.
