Hue: Toxic waste water affecting hundreds of households
Hundreds of households in Thuy Phu commune, Huong Thuy district, are living in heavily polluted environments due to the substandard waste water treatment systems of the Hue Brewery and a Hue paper production factory in Phu Bai industrial zone. People have complained to provincial authorities about this pollution but it is still yet to be resolved.

Soc Trang: Rare species of egret becoming extinct
The gardens of Soc Trang are home to many rare species of egret including the little egret, the Chinese pond heron. However, due to increasing consumption as speciality food the numbers of these rare species are quickly disappearing.

Bac Lieu: Rare sea turtle released
On September 30th, 2008 Bac Lieu Provincial Fisheries Department, in collaboration with Con Dao National Park in Ba Ria, Vung Tau province, released a rare sea turtle caught by a fisherman in Dong Hai district.

Dac Nong: Three rangers sentenced for bribery
On March 28th, 2008 three rangers of Dac Song Forestry Company caught four subjects illegally logging. The rangers asked the loggers for 10 million VND and subsequently released them.  One of the rangers involved was sentenced to three and a half years in prison and others were sentenced to two years probation by Dac Nong’s People’s Court.

Phu Tho: Miwon factory dumping waste in the Red River for one year
On Sep 30th, 2008 inspectors from the provincial department of Natural Resources and Environment, in cooperation with Phu Tho police, caught Miwon Vietnam (a monosodium glutamate company)  dumping untreated waste water into the Red River.

Quang Binh: 61m3 of illegal timber uncovered and confiscated
Quang Binh’s Environment Police recently confiscated 13m3 of the valuable timber hidden in Tuyen Hoa. In addition, in cooperation with Tuyen Hoa’s authorities, police confiscated 48m3 of the illegal timber cut down by loggers in primary forest in Tuyen Hoa.
