Quang Ninh: Men caught preparing tiger bone glue
On the early 16th September, three men were caught by the Quang Ninh Environment Police with a furnace, tiger bones and flesh to make tiger bone glue in Ha Long city. The subjects have been held in custody and the evidence including the tiger bones and flesh were confiscated and transferred to Ha Long Police for further investigation.

Hau Giang: Illegal wildlife found in vehicles
The Mobile Forest Ranger Unit from Hau Giang Forest Protection Department recently discovered several vehicles illegally carrying a total of 68kg of wildlife. The confiscated wildlife included turtles and a variety of snake species.

Quang Nam: More than 3,800 m3 of illegal timber confiscated
According to the Quang Nam department of Agriculture and Rural Development, during the first eight months of this year the department uncovered, settled  and confiscated more than 3,800 m3 of  illegal timber.

Quang Binh:  Proceedings commence in serious deforestation case
Proceedings have commenced in a large-scale deforestation case in Thuong Hoa commune, Minh Hoa district. The case which was uncovered by Quang Binh police in July, 2008  involved the seizure of 92 m3 of illegal timber and is the most serious case in Quang Binh in recent years.

Hanoi: Toxic waste affects people’s health
According to Hanoi’s authority, hundred of tons of toxic waste from industrial factories on the outskirts of Hanoi  have been dumped into the environment. Some of chemicals included in this waste are believed to be carcinogenic.  Reportedly, 70% of the factories in Hanoi carry out their operations without registering waste disposal output.

Bac Lieu: Birds dying in Bird garden
Large numbers of birds from a variety of species have been dying in Bac Lieu Bird Garden since the middle of August. Test results from the dead birds were avian flu negative but the actual cause of the mass deaths remains unknown.

Venomous sea snakes being hunted
Hunting  venomous sea snakes is a difficult and dangerous job but is now becoming more popular in coastal southern central provinces. This is causing a decrease in the numbers of sea snakes and marine resources in general. Stricter regulations on marine exploitation are required.

Are penalities for environment pollution violations inadequate?
The recent boom in the number of  violations of the environmental pollution laws points to the fact  Vietnam’s regulations for fining and investigating environment polluters are too lenient and remain inadequate.

Ho Chi Minh city: Rush to collect land cucumbers
Over the past few years, many local residents have been flocking to Can Gio mangrove forest, a biosphere reserve, to dig up land cucumbers. The overexploitation of the land cucumbers has led to the unbalanced nature of this mangrove forest ecosystem.
