An Giang: 1,018 kg of Illegal wildlife confiscated at Cambodia border
On 4th September, Chau Phu police and Provincial Forest Protection Department confiscated just over one thousand kilograms of wildlife including king cobras, monitor lizards, Asiatic soft-shell turtles and other species of snake, and soft-shell turtle that were being illegally transported across the Vietnam-Cambodia border.

Ninh Thuan: Precious turtles released
On 3rd September, staff from Nui Chua National Park released more than 80 precious turtles into the sea. These turtles had hatched on the beach but were given a helping hand to avoid predators on their journey to start their lives at sea.

Gia Lai: 40m3 timber confiscated
On 8th September 2008, a Gia Lai inter-agency investigation team apprehended a truck and confiscated 40m3 of rare and precious timber.

Dac Lac: Deforestation by ranger
On 7th September, Krong Nang district Forest Protection Department prosecuted the Head of Forest Management and Protection Station number 3 for deforestation. He was reported to have been directing deforestation activities and has been suspended from his job.

Ha Noi: Severe pollution in village
A village in Dan Phuong district, Ha Noi which specializes in processing pig leather has been found to have an alarmingly high level of environmental pollution. The local people would like to move it to a village complex in order to access waste treatment facilities to improve the environmental pollution problems and people’s health.

Harmful chemicals found in plastic food containers
According to a recent scientific report, plastic food containers have some chemicals such as polycarbonate, polyethylene terephthalate and polystyrene which can have a negative effect on human health. The report also suggests consumers should use glass containers as an alternative option.

Ha Noi: Waste disposal from a brewery dumped into Truc Bach lake
On 9th September, a brewery in Ba Dinh district was caught dumping waste directly into Truc Bach lake. It was determined this waste dumping had been occurring for more than two years. The brewery was also found to have been committing a variety of other offenses under the environmental protection law and has been forced to cease operations while the situation is addressed.

Strict sanctions on wildlife crime
Vietnam’s current legal system for wildlife protection remains incomplete and serves to facilitate wildlife crime which is making Vietnam an international hotspot for wildlife trade. The situation requires an improved legal regulations and a greater corporation on behalf of law makers.

Climate change integrated into hunger eradication and poverty reduction
A workshop addressing the topic of “Assessing the relationship between poverty and climate change” confirmed that climate change is posing a serious challenge to the poor. It is impossible for poor communes to adapt to climate change. Therefore, it is imperative that functional agencies develop a clear strategic direction and plan to address this issue.
