Cao Bang (VNA) – The population of the Cao Vit gibbons – a critically endangered
primate species – in northern mountainous Cao Bang province has increased in
terms of the number of groups and individuals, said an official of the northern
Cao Bang province’s Forest Rangers Department.

According to the recent statistics provided by Fauna and Floral International
(FFI) scientists, the Phong Nam-Ngoc Khue forests in Trung Khanh district is now
home to 17 groups of Cao Vit gibbon (scientifically known as Nomascus nasutus
nasutus) and between 94-96 individuals. The current number of Cao Vit gibbons is
almost 60 more than the 2003 figure, said FFI experts.

The Cao Bang Provincial People’s Committee has given the green light to the Cao
Vit gibbon protection project to be carried out on 7,400 ha in Ngoc Khe and
Phong Nam communes between now until 2011.

The 7.6 billion VND project is designed to tighten the protection of this
species and restore the biological environment, organise scientific research and
monitoring activities and raise local people’s awareness of the protection of
Cao Vit population.
