Wild animals confiscated from illegal trade
On November 30, the Thanh Hoa authorities confiscated 223kg of wildlife, issuing a total of 138 million Vietnam dong in fines.

Recently, Environmental Police working in cooperation with Quang Ninh Traffic Police
confiscated more than 200kg of wildlife which was being transported without the appropriate authorization.

Illegally traded tigers and bears confiscated in Ho Chi Minh city
On the night of November 30, the Environmental Police Department working in cooperation with Ho Chi Minh Forest Protection Department uncovered a case involving the illegal trade of wildlife. They confiscated a 41kg tiger and a 30kg Malayan sun bear which had been disemboweled and frozen.

Increasing number of forest protection law violations  
Cases involving violations of forest protection regulations are escalating at an alarming rate
in Thua Thien Hue and Dong Nai provinces. Since the beginning of the year, Thua Thien Hue
authorities have uncovered 675 cases, 352 of which involved wildlife trade and transportation. Last November alone, fines totaling 448 million Vietnam dong were administered in cases involving violations of forest protection law in Dong Nai province. (Vietnamese version)

Serow threatened in Hai Phong
The Cat Ba Island serow population has been in serious decline over the last few years as a
result of widespread hunting, particularly during its breeding season. The species is being
hunted primarily for its sex organs, which are preserved in wildlife wine to meet demand from wealthy consumers.

Mangrove forests key to preventing natural disasters
At a recent seminar in Ho Chi Minh city, scientists reported that restoration of mangrove forests
is essential to protect coastal areas from natural disasters like tsunamis. However, the area of
Vietnam’s mangroves has declined rapidly from 400,000ha in 1996 to 279,000ha in 2006.

Suspicions over hydrology power plant projects in Ha Tinh province
In the three years since the Huong Son hydrology power plant project was started, it has been noticed that the area of forest cleared for building is much larger than was originally planned. Even still, there are plans to construct another power plant project just 10km away.
