Wild orchids for sale in Hue streets
Recently, ethnic minorities have started selling wild orchids in Tran Hung Dao Street in Hue. These people, mostly from Dakrong district in Quang Tri province, have been observed selling more than 10 wild orchid species, some of which are considered rare.

Saving a plant species from extinction
Starting with four kilograms of seeds, a local resident in Kon Tum province has successfully cultivated seedings of a rare plant species (Disoxylum loureiri).

Dead pigs floating in Truong Giang river, Quang Nam province
Dead pigs, victims of a widespread ‘Blue Ear’ epidemic, were thrown into the river by their owners. They are now floating along a stretch of the Truong Giang River 30 kilometers in length, causing water pollution and spreading the epidemic to neighboring areas.

Can Gio biosphere reserve threatened by removal of Sipunculus worm
Removal and trade of the Sipunculus, a species of intertidal worm living in mangrove areas, is contributing to the collapse of these fragile ecosystems.

Polluted rivers and lakes in large Vietnamese cities
Recently, urban rivers and lakes in several large cities have been found to be seriously polluted. These include rivers in Hue, which have up to 15 tonnes of waste collected everyday, and Hanoi’s Thien Quang, Thanh Cong, Giang Vo and Dac Di lakes, some of which are currently being invaded by poisonous algae, or emitting the smell of rotten fish.
