Wild birds confiscated at Tan Son Nhat airport
On July 10, 21 wild birds were confiscated by Ho Chi Minh Customs Department following an attempt by a Vietnamese American to import them without the appropriate license. (Vietnamese version)

Vietnamese caught smuggling rhino horn
On July 10, two Vietnamese nationals were arrested at OR Tambo International airport in South Africa, after their checked luggage was found to contain four rhino horns.

Deputy Chief of Forestry Department in custody
On July 11, Deputy Chief of Quang Nam Forestry Department was taken into custody for abetting loggers in the Khe Dien deforestation case.

Recent spate of timber smuggling cases
Over the past few days, authorities have uncovered an attempt to smuggle rare timber over the Northern border in Quang Ninh province, the attempted export of ten containers of rare timber by a private company, as well as 40 motorbikes found to be illegally transporting wood in Lam Dong province.

Industrial zones in Ho Chi Minh City breaking environmental laws
According to environmental inspections carried out by the Ho Chi Minh Department of Natural Resources and Environment, 114 of 120 inspected companies were penalized for discharging waste in excess of national limits. Fines totaling over 483 million dong were administered.

Vietnam rice farmers threatened by rising sea levels
Rising sea levels triggered by climate change pose a major threat to rice-growing areas in Vietnam, the International Rice Research Institute has warned. If sea levels were to rise by one meter, Vietnam would lose more than 12 percent of its land, home to 23 percent of its people.
