lllegal loggers prosecuted for destroying forest in Quang Ngai Province 
19 people have been prosecuted, 11 of whom are senior officers including the commune chairman and the director of the management board for forestry projects, over the destruction of hundreds of hectares of forest in Quang Ngai Province.

Marine protected area established in Phu Quoc 
On May 4th 2007, the Vice-Chairman of the Kien Giang People's Committee, Mr Le Huu Hung, announced the establishment of a 22,000 ha marine protected area in Phu Quoc. (Vietnamese version)

Timber smuggling on the rise
There has been a recent increase in the smuggling of a range of valuable Vietnamese timbers into other countries, in particular China.

Students' award-winning idea to clean up oil spills
Three students have won first prize in a national competition named "Improving the use and protection of water sources". Their winning idea involved using kapok tree fibres to absorb oil from water after oil spills.

VOV launches environment and development contest 
On June 4th, Radio Voice of Vietnam (VOV) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) launched a contest titled "Environment and Development 2007". The contest aims to raise awareness, across all sectors of Vietnamese society, of the need to protect the environment.
