Alarm at water pollution from handicraft villages in Ha Tay Province
About 300-700 m3 of waste water is discharged directly into Day River from each of 50 handicraft villages in Ha Tay Province every day, which has caused serious water pollution in many districts downstream of the villages.  Nitrogen dioxide concentrations have been measured between eight and forty times higher than acceptable levels. Gas and liquid waste treatment system yields positive results in northern villages
A paint spray filtering system installed in Chang Son carpentry village in Ha Tay Province by researchers from the National Institute of Technological Science on Labour Protection has helped cut solvent gas emissions by 10 to 14 times. Another similar treatment system was also installed in the Quang Trung forging village in Nam Dinh Province. An official found involved in timber smuggling in Nghe An Province
The team leader of the Tuong Duong protected forest management department in Nghe An Province was recently caught smuggling timber. (Vietnamese version LINK)

Serious forest destruction in Lam Dong Province
A news article about forest destruction in the Da Huoai forest of Lam Dong Province highlights the failure of local authorities to control illegal exploitation of forest resources, with more than 600 forest destruction cases reported in 2006 alone. (Vietnamese version LINK)

New law documents

Decision No. 07/QD-BNN by the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development establishes the CITES Management Authority for Vietnam.  The decision was issued on the 23rd of January 2007 (Vietnamese version LINK)
