Central Vietnam – Last week, a turtle survey team in central Vietnam captured a young adult Vietnamese pond turtle (Mauremys annamensis) in a trap, marking the first documented capture of this rare and endemic freshwater turtle species within its habitat since 1941. Following four surveys aimed at identifying areas where the Vietnamese pond turtle might persist in the wild, the survey team settled upon a community where local residents reported recent captures of the species. The team set traps in a small lake complex and were delighted to find a rare turtle in one of the traps the following morning. The Vietnamese pond turtle is threatened by hunting and habitat loss. Found only in lowland areas of central Vietnam, the species has become less common in the trade in recent years. Conservation efforts have initially focused on identifying sites where populations of the species may remain in the wild.
