Until recently, scientists had believed that native populations in Vietnam had been extirpated due to hunting. However, during recent surveys by experts along the Hing River in Phu Yen Province, found foot prints and droppings indicating that at least a small numbers of Siamese crocodiles may continue to survive in the wild in Vietnam. The Siamese crocodile faces many threats including widespread hunting and loss habitat. Crocodile farming has also become a popular business in recent years, and thousands of crocodiles can be found in farms, mainly in the southern region of the country. Crocodile meat is common in specialty restaurants, and skins are used to make boots, handbags, belts, shoes, and other products. As part of a new project aimed at protecting wild populations of Siamese crocodiles in the Mekong region, IUCN has published the brochure to help raise awareness about the species and encourage people living in areas where crocodiles may still exist, to help protect them. The awareness pamphlet also includes several telephone numbers that can be used to obtain more information about the species and report observations.
