Large wildlife shipment confiscated in Da Nang
Da Nang City - On June 26, 2006, police and rangers of Da Nang city seized 450 kg of wildlife.  The shipment included 47 clouded monitors (Varanus bengalensis), 60 spot-billed ducks (Anas poecilorhyncha), and 121 kg of common rat snakes (Ptyas mucosus).  It also included 144 kg of turtles of which elongated tortoises (Indotestudo elongata), three yellow-headed temple turtles (Hieremys annandalii), 25 giant Asian pond turtles (Heosemys grandis), three Asian box turtles (Cuora amboinensis) and four Asian leaf turtles (Cyclemys tcheponensis) were present.  All of the turtles will be transferred to the Cuc Phuong Turtle Conservation Centre.  The Forest Protection Department (FPD) plans to release the remaining wildlife at Ba Na-Nui Chua Nature Reserve of Da Nang City.

Gaur found dead in Tra Lau Forest
Quang Tri province - Rangers of the Trieu Phong district FPD and Dakrong Nature Reserve staff recently discovered a dead gaur (Bos gaurus) in Tru Lau forest after receiving a local tip.  The gaur was reportedly trapped by hunters and died, succumbing to injuries.  The rangers removed and preserved the animal’s head and limbs for use as educational specimens, incinerating the remainder.

Waste incinerators successfully produced for district medical healthcare centers
Hanoi - Scientists from the Institute of Environmental Technology in Hanoi reportedly succeeded in producing and installing a new kind of solid-waste incinerator.The biggest one, with a capacity of 20 kg/hour, can accommodate dangerous waste from a 500-bed hospital and is less than half the cost of imported models.
The new incinerator has been installed in 15 medical healthcare centers nationwide.In addition, it can also be used for processing harmful solid-waste in rubber or leather factories.

Illegal coral trading continues
Quang Ninh province - On June 22, 2006, during an investigation by staff from the Ha Long Bay Management Board, 20 kg of illegal corals were confiscated in the Hon Ga Choi area of Quang Ninh.  It was the fourth recorded case involving coral trading since early June.  According to the Board, the coral industry entered a boom period recently as demand for souvenirs rose with the tourist season.
