Illegal wildlife trade
Da Nang City – On March 27th, Lien Chieu district rangers stopped a bus transporting five Malayan porcupines (Hystrix brachyura) and one civet. The driver admitted that the wildlife was purchased in Da Nang city and was being transported north to sell. The Lien Chieu district’s Forest Protection Department (FPD) confiscated the animals and impounded the vehicle pending further investigation.

Ha Tinh Province – On March 27th, the Vu Quang district police stopped a car and confiscated 10 bags of pangolins (Manis javanica) weighing a total of 300 kilograms. The police temporarily impounded the car and held the driver pending further investigation.

Galliformes stamp set to be launched
On April 1st, a stamp set depicting Vietnam’s threatened and endemic partridges and pheasants (Galliformes) will be launched by the Ministry of Post and Telecommunication of Vietnam. In consultation with ornithological experts from the BirdLife International Vietnam, the Ministry selected five Galliformes for the new stamp set. They are the Orange-necked Partridge (Arborophila davidi), Edwards’s Pheasant (Lophura edwardsi), Vietnamese Pheasant (Lophura hatinhensis), Germain’s Peacock-pheasant (Polyplectron germaini) and Crested Argus (Rheinardia ocellata). All five species, except for the Orange-necked Partridge, are listed on Decree 48 and have small populations that are declining because of habitat loss and fragmentation, and hunting.

Updates from ENV’s Wildlife Trade Hotline 18001522
On March 14th 2006, a man from Khanh Hoa province called ENV’s Wildlife Trade Hotline (1800 1522) to report a loris he observed in captivity. The man also informed the Ninh Hoa district’s FPD of the case. Rangers seized and released the loris into Cat Minh Phuoc forest on the same day.
