Crab-eating macaques trade case
HaiDuongProvince – On March 18th, the Hai Duong Police Department confiscated 102 crab-eating macaques (Macaca fascicularis) from a bus. The macaques were purchased in Thanh Mien district and being transported to the Mong Cai border in Quang Ninh province.

This is the third macaque trading case this month resulting in a total of more than 300 crab -eating macaques being confiscated by authorities.

Loggers attacked
DacNongProvince – On March 15th, rangers from the Dac R’Tin forest protection station in Dac R’lap district were attacked by a group of 30 people. The incident took place after the rangers confiscated timber illegally taken the previous day by a local resident.

Denmark assists Vietnam in environmental protection
Ha Noi  - On March 22nd, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment, the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Danish Embassy in Viet Nam held a conference to introduce “2005 – 2010 Vietnam – Denmark Development Co-operation in Environment Program” (DCE). DCE is the largest foreign-funded program on environmental protection in Vietnam with Denmark pledging 250 million Danish Krone (approximately 42 million USD).

The program will focus on five key areas, including pollution control in densely-populated areas with high poverty levels, sustainable development in poor urban areas, cleaner production in industry, sustainable livelihoods in and around marine protected areas and capacilty building for environmental planning and management. Under the marine protected areas component, a national training centre in marine protected areas will be established.

New publications

On March 15th, the General Department of Vietnam Customs launched a CITES Customs Manual. The manual is a joint effort between the Vietnam Customs Department and TRAFFIC Indochina. The book provides customs officers with a general understanding about CITES (Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora), instruments of CITES and a guide on what to do when illegal wildlife trade occurs across borders.
