Sarus cranes appear in Lang Sen Nature Reserve
Long An Province – On February 10th, a flock of sarus cranes (Grus antigone) landed in Lang Sen Nature Reserve (NR) of Tan Hung district. The sarus cranes are often found in Tram Chim National Park in Dong Thap Province, however, they have recently been found in Dong Thap Muoi and Lang Sen NR. Sarus cranes are protected in Group I of the 48 Decree.

Prosecution in elephant’s tusks trade case
Ha Noi – On February 7th, the Supreme People's Court prosecuted three people involved in the illegal trade of 245 elephant’s tusks from Tanzania to Viet Nam. The incident happened in December 2004 when 245 elephant’s tusks were discovered being transported illegally to Ha Noi. The tusks were hidden in a consignment of 4,000 kg of dried fish imported from Tanzania, and slipped past Hai Phong border customs officers.

The former director of a Hanoi-based export and import company was put on trial for trading forbidden goods. Two Hai Phong border customs officers were accused of failing in their responsibility causing serious consequences.

Wild pig attack
QuangNamProvince – On February 12th, a local man from Tien Phuoc district was attacked by a wild pig (Sus scrofa) which entered and destroyed his garden. This was the first reported case of a wild pig attack in Quang Nam Province.

Illegal timber trade
TayNinhProvince –  Since the beginning of 2006, the provincial Forest Protection Department (FPD) have reported several cases of illegal logging in the Chang Riec historic and cultural forest project area. The FPD suspected that the Cambodians were crossing the border to log the forest and making timber rafts to transport the timber down the river that separates the border.   In 2005, local authorities discovered 25 timber logs from Dau Tieng protected forest logged by Cambodians.

New Publications

The Centre for Guiding Children Activities of Central Level with the financial support of Sida Environmental Fund (SEF) recently published a set of environment communication books - “Games of Environment Education for children” and “Songs of Environment Education for Children”. With a message “Vietnamese children act for a green environment”, the books provide children with games and songs relating to the environment so that children can learn and play at the same time.

Wildlife Watch

Although many snakes species are protected by law, snake wine is still displayed and sold openly in many restaurants throughout Viet Nam.
