News Brief (E150, 20th - 26th January 2006)

The 2006 International “Year of the Turtle” launched
On January 19th, WWF Greater Mekong’s Vietnam Country Program in co-operation with the Research Institute for Marine Fisheries (RIMF) and the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Viet Nam launched the “Year of the Turtle” in Hai Phong city.  The event marked the signing of a partnership aimed at helping reduce the number of marine turtle mortalities resulting from fisheries bycatch through use of modified fishing equipment and a fishing vessel monitoring program.

New toll-free Wildlife Trade Hotline 1800-1522
ENV has established a new toll-free telephone line to facilitate the reporting of wildlife trade cases and to further encourage public participation in stopping the wildlife trade in Viet Nam. Callers may now call free to the ENV Wildlife Trade Hotline from anywhere in the country.

As in the past, ENV documents the information provided by the caller and passes on the information to the appropriate authorities for action.  In 2005, more than 150 wildlife trade cases were documented by ENV and cases were tracked in more than 40 provinces.  Successes have ranged from the confiscations of marine turtles, lorises, macaques, and other wildlife from markets and enforcement actions against restaurants serving or advertising wildlife, to commitments by several major national newspapers to stop advertising bear bile and become “Wildlife Friendly” publications.

ENV has also expanded its hotline operations, adding additional staff to track and monitor trade cases, increasing radio advertising, and installing the toll-free hotline number.  The old hotline number will remain active through 2006.
