Dead tiger discovered
BinhDuongProvince – On January 12th, the Binh Duong Provincial Police discovered and confiscated a dead 154 kg tiger in a taxi in Thu Dau Mot town. Tiger (Panthera tigris) is fully protected under Vietnamese law, listed in Group 1B of Decree 48.

Rangers under attack
DacNongProvince – On January 10th 2006, a ranger from the Dac R’lap District Forest Protection Department (FPD) was injured by two loggers in Nam Cat Tien forest. The loggers attacked the ranger with a chain saw and managed to escape, leaving 5.7m³ of cut timber at the scene.

Loggers takes revenge of rangers
HaiPhongCity - On January 18th 2006, some loggers destroyed the gardens of two rangers from the Cat Ba National Park FPD. The loggers took revenge after the rangers destroyed illegal traps and released a trapped serow in the protected forest area.

Germany supports over 12 million euros for Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park
QuangBinhProvince – The German government sponsored 12.63 million euro for a project entitled “Sustainable management and natural resources conservation in Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park”. The project was initiated in January 2006.

New Publications
“Overview of Wetlands Status in Viet Nam following 15 years of RAMSAR Convention Implementation”
The Vietnam Environment Protection Agency (VEPA), the World Conservation Union (IUCN) Viet Nam and the Mekong Wetlands Biodiversity Conservation and Sustainable Use Program (MWBP) have jointly produced the report “Overview of Wetlands Status in Viet Nam following 15 years of RAMSAR Convention Implementation”. The report provides comprehensive, updated data on the status of wetlands in Vietnam. The report also identifies national and international laws and policies that relate to wetlands, and highlights aspects of these laws and policies that are relevant to future wetlands management in Viet Nam. Viet Nam signed the RAMSAR Convention on Wetlands fifteen years ago, and recently designated Cat Tien National Park’s Bau Sau wetland as the nation’s second RAMSAR wetland site.
