A red alert over slipper orchid species
Viet Nam is home to more than 20 slipper orchid species (Paphiopedilum spp). However, due to increased collection, at least half of the slipper orchid species have become extinct. The red slipper orchid (P. delenatii) is one of the most famous orchids in Viet Nam. Before 1999, its population was diverse. However, between 2000 and 2001, local people overexploited the plant for illegal export, resulting in a decrease in its numbers. It is now considered threatened by extinction.
