A forest ranger died in an illegal timber accident
Ha NamProvince – On December 31st 2005, a ranger from the Kim Bang Forest Protection Department (FPD) was died from injuries sustained after he crashed his motorcycle while pursuing a logger involved in illegally coal production in Kim Bang district.

Violations of the Forest Protection and Development Law
In 2005, the National FPD recorded 36,376 violations of the Forest Protection and Development Law including 3,901 violations involving illegal timber and forest products. FPD identified the main areas of deforestation as including Binh Phuoc, Dac Nong, Binh Thuan, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, Ca Mau and Ben Tre. National FPD also reported that in 2005, three rangers died and eight more were injured in violent clashes with loggers and traders.

Wildlife protection and development
Ho Chi Minh City – In 2005, Ho Chi Minh FPD carried out 430 awareness-raising campaigns on wildlife protection and breeding. FPD conducted around 200 inspections of farms holding bears, crocodiles, pythons, porcupines, and soft-shell turtles. The inspections documented 466 bears tagged with microchips in captivity, more than 9,000 black and yellow pythons, 162 porcupines and more than 78,50 crocodiles being kept at 35 farms, four of which had received exporting permit.

Forest worker investigated
KonTumProvince – The Dak To FPD recently discovered a case involving the exploitation of 8.8m³ of protected timber in Ngoc Tu commune. From the investigation, it was determined that the perpetrator was a worker on the Board of Afforestation for paper materials, who took advantage of available tools to exploit protected timber.

Construction of solid waste treatment station
Ho Chi Minh City – On December 30th 2005, the Ministry of Planning and Investment issued a license of investment to a project for the construction of a solid waste treatment station owned by California Waste Solutions Company. The project was carried in Binh Chanh district with a total investment of 430 million USD. This is the biggest waste treatment project ever in Vietnam and is due to be finished in one year. The station will have a total capacity of 3.000 tons of waste per day.
