Education for Nature Vietnam

Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV) was established in 2000 as Vietnam’s first non-governmental organization focused on the conservation of nature and the environment. Our mission is to foster greater understanding amongst the Vietnamese public about environmental issues of local, national and global significance, ranging from the protection of wildlife and natural ecosystems to climate change. We employ creative and innovative strategies to influence attitudes and mobilize Vietnamese citizens to live in balance with the natural world and to take action to protect Vietnam’s precious environment.

Loris transferredto Ba Vi National Park
On January 27, a about 600-700 gram  Pygmy loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus) was transferred to Ba Vi National Park by the park’s officers with the assistance of ENV.

ENV’s first wildlife club in Hanoi
On January 22, the Wildlife Club in Hanoi (WiC-HN) was successfully launched at the Hanoi University of Science, part of the Vietnam National University, with 20 core members.

Bear exhibitions and pledge collections
From January 20 to 23, ENV held bear exhibitions at the University of Languages and International studies (part of the  Vietnam National University) and the National Planning Exhibition.

Ninh Binh: Five macaques transferred to Cuc Phuong NP
On January 19, three stump-tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides) and two pig-tailed macaques (Macaca leonine) were transferred to the Raising Animals for Conservation and Development project at Cuc Phuong NP by the Ninh Binh FPD with the assistance of ENV.

Leopard cat transferred to  Cuc Phuong NP
On January 20, a leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) was transferred to the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program (CPCP) at Cuc Phuong NP with the cooperation of the CPCP, the Cat Ba NP FPD, and the assistance of ENV’s Wildlife Crime Unit.

Launch of ENV Wildlife Club in Hanoi
On January 22, the 4th club belonging to ENV’s Volunteer Network - the Wildlife Club in Hanoi (WiC-HN) - will be officially launched at the Hanoi University of Science, part of the Vietnam National University.

Two-year jail term for selling wildlife to Vietnam’s rich
Knowing that the wealthy are the most likely to purchase wild animals, their parts or derivatives to mix and consume with alcohol to make them feel stronger and more invigorated, wildlife trader Mr. Ho Ngoc Hue collected wildlife specialties to sell to customers and restaurants.

Binh Duong: Three pig-tailed macaques successfully transferred
On January 13, three pig-tailed macaques (Macaca leonine) were transferred to the Nui Cau Protected Forest in good health by the Binh Duong FPD.

ENV launches Bear Bile PSA
In December 2010, ENV launched the Public Service Announcement (PSA): “Bear bile is not a magic medicine”. ENV regularly releases PSAs in order to raise public awareness in “saying no to bear bile”.

Recruitment of volunteers to protect wildlife in Nha Trang and Quang Binh
On December 24, ENV held a recruitment drive of volunteers to protect wildlife in Nha Trang. The drive was successful and saw 15 young people from the coastal city registering to become ENV volunteers.

Pygmy Loris confiscated in Da Nang
On December 30, a pygmy loris (Nycticebus pygmaeus) was confiscated from a resident by the cooperation of Da Nang Forest Protection Department (FPD) and ENV with the supportive assistance of Volunteers.

Seven macaques transferred to Soc Son Rescue Center
On December 24, seven captive macaques in Hue were transferred to the Soc Son Rescue Center (RC). The transfer includes three Pig-tailed macaques (Macaca leonina), three stump - tailed macaques (Macaca arctoides), and one Rhesus macaque (Macaca mulatta).

Malayan sun bear transferred to Vietnam Bear Rescue Center
On December 21, a Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus) weighing around 60-70kg was transferred to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Center in Tam Dao with the cooperation of the Animals Asia Foundation (AAF) and the Thua Thien - Hue FPD, and the assistance of ENV.

On December 15, high school student Loan Phuong from Hanoi voluntarily handed over two keeled box turtles (Cuora mouhotii) to ENV’s Wildlife Crime Unit.

On October 20, 2009, an ENV Wildlife Crime Officer received a tip that a binturong (Arctictis binturonga) was being kept at the Bach Van resort in Quang Nam.

Gibbon rescued from church
On November 28, after receiving information about the animal from an ENV network volunteer, ENV’s Ho Chi Minh City office conducted an investigation of Dac Lo Church and found a female gibbon.

Thanh Hoa authorities say tiger glue auction is legal; NGO slams it as a self-defeating move. A decision to auction nearly three kilograms glue made from bones of a seized tigers carcass by Thanh Hoa Province defeat the very purpose of conservation, activists charge.

Conservation of tiger glue? Tiger conservation efforts end up in glue pots
On November 19, 2010, the Thanh Hoa People’s Committee issued document number 6414/UBND-NN allowing a provincial government department to auction off 2.77kg of tiger glue. An ENV investigation found that the glue fetched 50 million VND/kg at the sale.

On November 5, the ENV Wildlife Crime hotline received a report about two macaques being kept at residence and another macaque beingkept at a cafe in Dong Nai province.

Bear exhibitions and pledge collections
On November 11 and 12 at Da Nang‘s Polytechnic University, ENV organized an exhibition and collected pledges not to use bear bile and products from bears, with 1,400 people signing pledges.

From November 19 to 21, in Ninh Binh and Hanoi, ENV will hold the 2010 annual meeting of voluntary activities and award honors to volunteers who have contributed greatly to wildlife protection activities

On October 18, ENV received an anonymous report about a marine turtle at a seafood restaurant in Bac Lieu province.

ENV participates in live VOV program about how to deal with confiscated wildlife
This weekend on November 6, ENV and the Vietnam National Museum of Nature will participate in a live VOV radio program to discuss and exchange ideas about the question: How can we deal with wildlife seized from illegal trade to act as both a deterrent and legally protect the species?

From October 26-28, ENV’s Mobile Team and Volunteer Network were busy conducting a range of activities in Nghe An, encouraging public participation in efforts for the protection of bears by pledging not to consume bear bile or bear products.

On October 22, a new online euthanasia poll was officially launched on ENV’s Vietnamese website. The Vietnamese government faces  many difficulties in dealing with confiscated wildlife and current options for dealing with it each pose their own problems.

Tiger page launched on ENV’s Vietnamese website
On October 15, a new tiger page was officially launched on ENV’s Vietnamese website. In addition to general information about the Indochinese tiger species, visitors to the page can learn about threats to the survival of Vietnam’s tigers in the wild, the tiger trade, and the urgent need to end tiger farm operations in Vietnam through a photo gallery and video clips.

Binh Duong: Macaques transferred to nature reserve
On September 29, an informant notified ENV of a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca leonine) being kept at a restaurant in Binh Duong province. ENV immediately alerted the Binh Duong FPD, resulting in the  confiscation of the macaque.

Ho Chi Minh City: Otters and monitor lizards rescued
In March 2010, an ENV Volunteer Network member notified ENV of a link on a website advertising wildlife animals for sale, such as otters, Vietnamese pond turtles (Mauremys annamensis), keeled box turtles (Cuora mouhotii), impressed tortoises (Manouria impressa), elongated tortoises (Indotestudo elongate), Indochinese box turtles (Cuora galbinifrons) and many others.

The ENV Mobile Unit and Volunteer Network have had five busy days carrying out a wide range of activities in Pleiku City focused on raising awareness and encouraging public participation in efforts to protection wildlife.

Binh Duong: Hawskbill turtles released into the sea
On September 24, two hawksbill marine turtles (Eretmochelys imbricata) were released into the sea by authorities in Binh Duong. The case was first reported to ENV by staff from Wildlife at Risk (WAR) based in HCM city after the turtles were observed for sale in a restaurant.

Ho Chi Minh City: Illegal wildlife being openly sold
On August 25, the ENV Wildlife Crime Hotline learned about wildlife being sold on the pavement and immediately notified the Ho Chi Minh City FPD.

Hanoi: Stuffed leopard cat removed from display at restaurant
On September 13, two volunteers from ENV’s Volunteer Network notified ENV of a stuffed leopard cat (Prionailurus bengalensis) being displayed at a restaurant. Two days later, the ENV Wildlife Crime Unit forwarded the information to police at Nguyen Du commune who asked the restaurant owner to remove the display and stop selling wildlife.

Da Nang’s ENV team carried out survey of businesses in Hue
From September 6-12, Da Nang’s ENV team conducted a survey in Hue City and over 100 business establishments were monitored.

Ho Chi Minh City: Bear event at Big C
From September 18-19, the recently established ENV team in Ho Chi Minh City held their second ever Bear Protection event at the Big C supermarket. During the event, films on bear bile extraction were aired and information boards displayed about bear species in Vietnam.

Hanoi: ’Air pollution’ painting competition award ceremony
On September 27, the award ceremony for the ’Air pollution’ painting competition will be held at the Nguyen Du Secondary School in Hanoi. In March 2010, a painting competition about the topic of air pollution was launched by ENV in conjunction with Boo Skateshops and Karibon Facewear.

Hanoi: Huge wildlife bone trade network uncovered
On September 15, Hanoi Environmental Police (EP) in conjunction with relevant authorities uncovered a wildlife bone trade network operated by a couple at their home in Hoang district, and confiscated evidence of up to nearly 900kg of animal bone from four different locations.

Wildlife Trade Watch by Mobile Unit
On August 17 and September 11, two Wildlife Trade Watches were carried out by ENV’s Mobile Unit to strengthen the mornitoring and surveying skills of ENV’s Volunteers and ENV staff members.

Binh Dinh: Macaque voluntarily handed over
On September 15, a macaque was voluntarily handed over to the Van Canh FPD. In late August, a local resident notified ENV of a macaque being kept as a pet at her house for a year and requested a voluntary transfer. The Van Canh FPD was informed and on September 15, the macaque was handed over to the FPD.

Thua Thien - Hue: Local Wildlife Protection Clubs established
On August 25, the Vietnamese Youth Action for Wildlife club was launched in Thua Thien - Hue province, yet another in the ENV Volunteer Network. The club was established to assist ENV’s Wildlife Crime Unit in reporting and monitoring wildlife trade activities, and to contribute to stopping the illegal trade of wildlife.

On August 26, Education for Nature - Vietnam (ENV) carried out a Bear Protection Event at Phuc Tho Town of former Ha Tay province, famous for its many bear farms and sale of bear bile. During the event, films on bear bile extraction were aired, information boards displayed about bear species in Vietnam, and many publications handed out to local residents.

On August 24, an elongated tortoise (Indotestudo elongate) was handed over voluntarily to the Ho Chi Minh City FPD. The previous day, an ENV staff member received information about the tortoise being kept for five years by a local resident.

Wildlife Protection Club in Ho Chi Minh City established
On July 27, the Action for Wildlife Volunteer Club in Ho Chi Minh City was launched with the participation of 43 volunteers. Following the launch, club members were provided with training on monitoring skills, basic species identification and practice in the field.

Bear confiscated from tourist site in Quang Ninh
In June, a registered bear at a Van Hai tourist site was confiscated by the local district FPD and transferred to the Hoanh Bo Farm. The owner of the tourist site was fined 12 million VND for keeping an animal in poor conditions.

ENV provides training to staff from five National Parks
From May 28 to June 6, ENV gave Environmental Education (EE) skills training to rangers from five National Parks: U Minh Thuong, U Minh Ha, Tram Chim, Mui Ca Mau and Con Dao in U Minh Thuong National Park, Kien Giang Province.

According to Ha Tinh Forest Protection Department (FPD), the three confiscated Asiatic black bear (Selenarctos thibetanus) were transferred to the Soc Son Rescue Center safely on April 24, 2010.

Regarding to the wildlife crime case filed by ENV on April 14, 2010 which involved a car transporting a load of wildlife via Lao-Vietnam border gate, Nghe An FPD said that due to bad health condition, 104 confiscated live turtles were dead.

Following a call to the ENV Wildlife Crime Hotline, on April 13, Provincial FPD confiscated a pig-tailed macaque weighing around 4kg from a resident’s house.

Survey on wildlife trade and consumption in Da Nang
From 22 to 29 March, ENV staff from the Da Nang office conducted a survey on wildlife trade and consumption in Hai Chau district in Da Nang City with restaurants, souvenir shops and traditional chinese medicine shops as the main focus.

Resident voluntarily hands over macaque
On February 9, a resident from Dong Nai contacted the ENV Wildlife Crime Hotline to report that she wished to transfer a pig-tailed macaque (Macaca leonine) to a national park or nature reserve.

Quang Ninh bear investigation televised
On March 29, a report on was aired on VTV2. The report once more highlighted the issue of bears being kept illegally at farms so that their bile could be sold to foreign tourists and the report also calls up authorities needs to introduce effective methods to bring an end to this illegal activity.  

Asian Turtle Crisis Fact Sheet  released (April 1, 2010)
ENV has produced a fact sheet to promote understanding and better protection for Vietnam’s tortoises and freshwater turtles, threatened by hunting and trade. 

New Tortoise and Freshwater Turtle Identification Resource (March 31, 2010)
ENV and our partners from the Cuc Phuong Turtle Conservation Center and the Asian Turtle Program have produced an electronic identification guide for law enforcement officers to the tortoises and freshwater turtles of Vietnam.  The resource, updated annually, will be distributed to frontline wildlife protection officers throughout Vietnam.

On March 14, a foreign tourist emailed ENV’s hotline to report that the Van Long Resort in Ninh Binh province was publicly displaying two stuffed tigers.

Green Grants protect nature and the environment in Vietnam

On October 16, Hanoi Environmental Police made another important tiger bust, seizing two frozen tigers (129kg total) from a taxi and arresting four suspects.

In October, a Malayan sun bear (Helarctos malayanus), was confiscated from a petrol station in the southern province of Hau Giang after many months of efforts by ENV’s Major Crimes Officer

Vietnamese urge Koreans not to travel for bear bile
A news article appeared in the Korean Joong Ang Daily, highlighting the Vietnamese call for Koreans not to travel to bear bile farms in Vietnam and buy bile extracted from moon bears raised in cages. The problem is that many of these Korean travelers are unaware that such activities are illegal in Vietnam.
