Hanoi: Court sentences tiger smugglers
Two tiger smugglers have been sentenced to 36 months and 24 months probation respectively. Those people were apprehended while illegally transporting and trading two live tigers on January 7, 2008. In addition to the probation, the two accused were fined five million VND each.

Tay Ninh: Illegal wildlife transporters detected
On August 9, 2008, Traffic Police stopped a motorbike suspected of illegally transporting wildlife. The driver escaped leaving behind nearly 30kg of monitor lizards.

Hau Giang: Companies fined 91 million VND for causing environmental pollution
Three companies have been fined a total of 91 million VND for dumping untreated waste water. In addition, the companies were ordered to ensure all waste water is treated before it is discharged into the environment.

Nghe An: Scientists discover new lizard species
A new species of lizard (Cyrtodactylus chauquangensis sp.nov.) has been discovered in the buffer zone of Pu Huong Nature Reserve. Specimens of this lizard species are currently being stored and preserved in the Zoology Faculty of Vinh University (Nghe An Province).

Quang Binh: New species of snake discovered
Scientists have discovered a new species of snake in Phong Nha- Ke Bang National Park (Fimbrios smithi). Phong Nha - Ke Bang is reportedly the place where the most reptile and amphibian species have been discovered in recent years in Viet Nam.

Vietnam: 86 percent of primates face extinction crisis
A new report highlighting the threats facing primates will be released at an upcoming conference on primate protection held by IUCN (International Union for Conservation of Nature). The findings reveal that 71% of primates in Asia are now listed as Endangered. Within Asia, Vietnam ranks as the country with the second highest number of endangered primate species with 86% of primates found in Vietnam being listed as Endangered.

Bac Kan: Illegal loggers severely destroy forests
Illegal loggers are cutting down trees for timber in many forests in Bac Kan. Despite local rangers making significant efforts to stop people from destroying the forests, the situation continues to be complicated and hard to control.
