Waging war on wildlife crime
On 10 July, 2008, police seized 100kg of pangolins left behind in a car in Bac Son Ward, Bim Son Town (Thanh Hoa Province).

On 11 July, 2008, Quang Binh Police, in collaboration with rangers, confiscated nearly 3m3 of timber and 8kg of wildlife from a local man’s house. The wildlife included monitor lizards, turtles and a king cobra.

Over the course of one month, Quang Binh Environmental Police have dealt with three cases of illegal storage and transportation of timber in the buffer zone of Phong Nha – Ke Bang National Park. 22m3 of timber has been confiscated with the estimated value of hundreds of million VND.

On 15 July, 2008, 46 porcupines and civets were released back into Dak Uy Forest (Dak Ha District, Gia Lai Province). These animals were confiscated by Kon Tum Police on 12 July, 2008 whilst illegally being transported.

Nam Cat Tien National Park: Primate Rescue Centre kicks off
On 12 July, 2008, a new primate rescue centre opened in Nam Cat Tien National Park in Dong Nai Province. The centre, covering 30 hectares of land, consists of 10 cages on the Tien Island.

Da Nang: Chinese river dolphin caught on sandbank, dead blue whale washed ashore
On 10 July, 2008, a Chinese river dolphin was caught on a sandbank and released back into the sea by the fishermen. On the same day, a dead blue whale was found washed up on the shore and was buried by the same people as well.

Ho Chi Minh: Recycling Festival raises people’s awareness about environmental protection
On 20 April 2008, the Recycling Festival was celebrated for the first time with the aim of raising people’s awareness about environmental protection and suggesting effective ways of recycling. The festival attracted thousands of people with a variety of practical activities such as “Exchanging waste for gifts” and “What is old for some might be new for others”.

Khanh Hoa: Hyundai-Vinashin shipyard accused of dumping illegal toxic waste
On 8 July 2008, Environmental Police caught people from Hyundai-Vinashin Shipyard Company on their way to dump over 100 tons of toxic waste near a residential area. The people involved were escorted to the Police Station and are awaiting judgment from authorities.

Quang Nam: Hospital fined for causing pollution
Binh Dan Hospital has been fined 28.5 million VND for discharging waste water which polluted the environment. This is the seventh organization in the city to be fined for polluting the environment in the past month.

Quang Binh: Railway station staff abetting timber stealers
On 14 July 2008, a large amount of illegal timber was publicly loaded onto a train at Dong Le Railway Station without any intervention by station staff. The staff member on duty reportedly said that they were in charge of operating the train but had not responsible for the cargo on it.
