Illegal wildlife trader prosecuted
On 13 April, Quang Binh Forest Protection Department inspected a truck and found over 700kg of wildlife inside, including monitor lizards (Varanus sp.) and king cobras (Ophiophagus Hannah) both of which are listed as endangered. Quang Binh Police decided to prosecute the owner of the truck for the illegal transportation of wildlife.

Ha Tay: Two illegal “Po mu” traders prosecuted
On April 21, after conducting an investigation time, Ha Tay police decided to prosecute two individuals for the illegal trade and transportation of 12m3 “Po mu” timber (Fokienia hodginsii). The case was first discovered on 16 April.

Lai Chau: Over 20kg wildlife confiscated
On April 16, Lai Chau Police confiscated 21.5kg of Chinese Cobras (Naja atra). The confiscated snakes were subsequently transferred to Lai Chau Forest Protection Department.

Illegal black coral transportation
After conducting an inspection of Sa Ky port, Quang Ngai Border Police discovered a ship containing 25kg of black coral (Antipathidae) as it was being transported inland. The ship owner was fined. (Vietnamese version)

Dong Nai: Approximately 40,000m3 water waste released directly to the river
According to Dong Nai DONRE, there are 13 large industrial zones in Dong Nai province releasing more than 57,000m3 waste water everyday of which only 20,000m3 goes through a cleaning process in the waterworks. This means approximately 40,000m3 of waste water is released directly into the river everyday. Inadequate water treatment and the increasing number of industrial zones in the area are the main reasons for the pollution.

Polluted water sickens 10,000 people
Brackish water heavily polluted with alumina is making the 10,000 people who live in the hamlets of Loc An Commune, central Thua Thien Hue province, sick. The pollution is leading to a range of infectious diseases, sparking concern from local authorities.
