Raising Awareness about the Threats to Vietnam’s Wildlife Resulting from Hunting and the Illegal Trade

A new teaching kit, produced by Education for Nature-Vietnam (ENV), will help raise awareness amongst school children about the threats to Vietnam’s wildlife resulting from hunting and the illegal wildlife trade. The teaching kit includes a lesson plan, a short film, and a poster, and was specifically designed and tested for use in community-based environmental education programmes at protected areas in Vietnam.

Focused on middle school-aged students, the film and the poster help support the main messages contained within the lesson plan, revealing the harsh nature of the illegal trade, and asking students “What will be left if hunting and trade continues?” Following the lesson plan, after watching the film, students are engaged in a lively discussion through which they are encouraged to share their own experiences and stories about hunting and the wildlife trade

The film was produced in 2003 by ENV in cooperation with VTV2. It features a young hero, named Dung, who introduces the audience to the issue of the wildlife trade in Vietnam. He meets a notorious trader and learns from his friend, a forest ranger, about ways that he, and other students, can help protect wildlife.

The teaching kit 'The wildlife trade lesson plan' is just one of 14 lesson plans produced by ENV for use in community-based environmental education programmes focused on protected areas. The teaching kit will be distributed to all participating environmental education programmes within the EE Family Network.

ENV has been working for more than four years to raise awareness about the threats to Vietnam’s wildlife resulting from hunting and the illegal trade. ENV has produced and distributed educational and awareness materials throughout the country and worked closely with the media to bring public attention to the issue.

ENV wishes to thank SOPTOM and the British Embassy for their generous support on this project.
